What is a Lipoma?

A Lipoma is a growth of fat cells encapsulated in a thin, fibrous sac usually found just below under the skin. They can be found on any part of the body including torso, head, neck, upper thighs, upper arms, and armpits. When a lipoma occurs on the back of the head or the neck it is called “buffalo hump”.

Lipomas are the most common noncancerous soft tissue growth:

  • Lipoma on neckSlow growing, fatty lump
  • Mobile and “squishy” to the touch
  • Not usually tender
  • Most common in middle age
  • Some have more than one at a time
  • Harmless and can go untreated
  • If a lipoma is bothersome, painful, or growing, it can be removed.

What is a Skin Tag?

skin tagA skin tag is a small piece of soft, hanging skin that may have a peduncle, or stalk. They can appear anywhere on the body, but especially where skin rubs against other skin or clothing.

Skin tags are very common and generally occur after midlife. They affect men and women equally. They are not dangerous and are benign tumors of the skin.

TREATMENT AND REMOVAL

Lipomas and Skin Tags can be removed by Dr. Alexander Gross at Georgia Dermatology Center in Cumming, Georgia. He will first inject a local anesthetic like lidocaine around the lipoma or skin tag and then make an incision in the skin to remove the growth. Once removed, he closes the incision with some sutures.
